Today I brought you something very-very cool. I'm not sure about you, but I love things that are fun to make and also can be used around the house (or, outside the house, for that matter!).
As we now live in 2022, almost every store around the world requires either to purchase a bag from the store or to use your own bag. And I love that - I've been shopping with reusable bags for the last 10 years at least. So believe me - I have some experience on this matter lol.
And I can tell you this - crochet reusable market bag is one of the best for grocery shopping! It is fun to make, easy to care and super cute looking! I've wrote down a free pattern for you to make this super cute crochet market bag and rock your next grocery shopping. It just takes a few hours to finish the bag, so it's a great project to stitch away while watching some TV show in the evening.
As I mentioned above, I have a free pattern in the form of written instructions. However, if you prefer to have a printable PDF pattern that you can download, save and check details wherever you go - you can get it here:
Now, let's begin!
You will need:
- 100g of DK weight yarn (Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton DK, which you can get here);
- crochet hook size G-6 4.0mm;
- tapestry needle to weave in ends.
All instructions are in US crochet terms.
Add stitch marker or contrasting yarn to mark the beginning of the row.
Row 1: chain 90. Make sure not to twist the chain and join it with sc to the other end on the same side (see pic).
Then sc in side stitches of rows you made before - total of 6 sc.
Then make 1 sc in each loop on the side and 1 sc in each sc, that joins the loops (see photo) - total of 50 sc (the same as the amount of rows with loops you made).
Here on this photo I marked the spots where you will make sc on the sides of the piece:
Then sc in side stitches of rows you made before - total of 6 sc. Repeat from the beginning for the second handle. After finishing this row, you should have a total of 304 single crochet st. (90 + 6 + 50 + 6 + 90 + 6 + 50 + 6).
Row 2: chain 90, 6 sc, (8 sc, sc decrease) repeat 5 times, 6 sc. Repeat from the beginning of the row. After finishing this row you will have 294 sc (you decreased 10 sc on the sides).
Row 3: chain 90, 57 sc, chain 90, 57 sc.
Repeat last row 3 times more for a total of 6 rows. In the very last stitch of the last row make a slip stitch instead of single crochet.
This is how the spot where handle is attached to the bag should look like:
Leave about 4 inches tail, cut the yarn and weave in the end.
This is how your market bag should look like at this point:
Now take another thread from the center of the ball to double the yarn.
With 2 strands of yarn, chain 1. Find a spot on the handle about 1/3 from the whole length and make large loops of single crochet around all 6 strands of handle. See picture how it should look like after you've made a few stitches.
Make 30 sc this way. If they look a bit too loose, you can just push them together with your hands, so that stitches would sit right next to each other.
Cut the yarn after making 30 sc and repeat for another handle. Weave in the ends.
Voila! Your market bag is ready!
